About me

I’m Freek, a mid-thirties bloke who lives with his lovely wife in the beautiful Belgian city of Gent.

Growing up, my family’s bookcases were filled with books about history, art and classic fantasy and scifi literature. Some of my favourite toys were LEGO, toy soldiers and scale model figures. I read Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter before it was cool. A true nerdhipster.

As a student, I studied sociology and political science and worked as a researcher, organizer and teacher in universities and art colleges. I love delving deep into a topic and becoming an expert, but equally enjoy learning widely and seeing what different fields and disciplines can learn from one another.

For several years I organized LARP-events as part of VZW Eternica. Writing scenario, making props and decorating the locations made me realize I love bringing imaginary worlds and their inhabitants to life. After passing the torch to the next generation of game masters, miniature games became another medium to flex my creative muscles in.

With The Futuristic and Fantastic I am professionalizing my own practice and exploring new horizons by creating opportunities for everyone to create and play.
